With 999策略白菜网站 support of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Xuan'en County, funded by 999策略白菜网站 education foundation of Southeast University and EMGdotART foundation, 999策略白菜网站 international joint studio teaching, ”Lianghekou: Regeneration of an Ancient Tujia Village along 999策略白菜网站 Salt Road” officially opened in Pengjia Village, Shadaogou Town on April 28, 2019. Led by Prof. Zhang Tong and Dr. Wang Chuan from School of Architecture, Southeast University, 11 graduate students joined a team of nearly 50 students and tutors from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Università Iuav di Venezia and Chongqing University. In 999策略白菜网站 next six weeks, Chinese and foreign students from various majors including architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture and environmental design will contribute to 999策略白菜网站 local community with their professional knowledge. They will explore how 999策略白菜网站 declining ancient villages along 999策略白菜网站 Salt Road can be regenerated in 999策略白菜网站 upcoming tourism development, while avoiding 999策略白菜网站 erosion of 999策略白菜网站 vibrant local cultural heritage caused by instant and superficial consumerism.
BACKGROUND
Lianghekou Village, located in Xuanen County, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province, was a commercial village along 999策略白菜网站 ancient Salt Road during 999策略白菜网站 Ming and Qing dynasties. 999策略白菜网站 one-hundred-meter street, which typically embodies 999策略白菜网站 tectonic characteristics of Tujia and Miao stilt house and 999策略白菜网站 settlement pattern of commercial villages, has been well preserved. As a result of population loss and commercial decline, 999策略白菜网站 once thriving ancient village is suffering from 999策略白菜网站 decay.
At present, Shadaogou Town, where 999策略白菜网站 heritage villages such as Pengjiazhai and Lianghekou are located, is embracing 999策略白菜网站 opportunity of 999策略白菜网站 development of mass tourism. Tujia villages represented by 999策略白菜网站 national heritage of Pengjiazhai is attracting 999策略白菜网站 attention from 999策略白菜网站 out world. 999策略白菜网站 opening of 999策略白菜网站 highway in 2019 will bring numerous visitors to this hidden 999策略白菜网站 Salt Road valley. How to avoid superficial consumption and preserve 999策略白菜网站 authentic values and identities of 999策略白菜网站 national cultural heritage in 999策略白菜网站 predictable mass boom of tourism, so as to regenerate 999策略白菜网站 declined ancient villages, is not only 999策略白菜网站 topic of this joint teaching studio, but also 999策略白菜网站 common challenge faced by human cultural heritages worldwide, including 999策略白菜网站 city of Venice.
OBJECTIVES
To demonstrate 999策略白菜网站 power of architecture as forces of responsiveness and advocacy in 999策略白菜网站 face of increasingly fragile and vulnerable cultural patrimony.
To challenge students to address an architectural resilience that supports 999策略白菜网站 economic advantages of tourism, while celebrating 999策略白菜网站 authentic values and cultural identities of historical legacies.
999策略白菜网站 FIRST WEEK FIELDWORK
999策略白菜网站 42 students from four universities will be divide into 6 mix groups, each of 7 students from different schools.
Each group will be given two tasks. One is a section of 999策略白菜网站 linear village consisting of both sides of 999策略白菜网站 street. Students are required to do 999策略白菜网站 survey and research of 999策略白菜网站 building typology consisting of but not limited to space, structure, façade, material and building techniques. Besides, each group should select one of 999策略白菜网站 following six overlays to do systematic research:
1. 999策略白菜网站 master plan of 999策略白菜网站 whole Lianghekou village including 999策略白菜网站 old and new, 999策略白菜网站 topography and 999策略白菜网站 infrastructure system.
2. 999策略白菜网站 research of Tujia nation from 999策略白菜网站 views of anthropology, ethnology, history and economics.
3. 999策略白菜网站 climate and geographic conditions, 999策略白菜网站 natural system and resources along 999策略白菜网站 valley.
4. 999策略白菜网站 local cultural identities along 999策略白菜网站 valley.
5. 999策略白菜网站 archi-tectonic system and building techniques of Tujia stilt house and settlement.
6. 999策略白菜网站 comprehensive planning of Enshi Prefecture and Xuanen County of 999策略白菜网站 recent years as well as 999策略白菜网站 systems of infrastructure and community service along 999策略白菜网站 valley.
It is intended that 999策略白菜网站 research work be both documentary and projective. As well as recording 999策略白菜网站 actual conditions on 999策略白菜网站 site, students should also think about other possibilities that might be appropriate for 999策略白菜网站 coming change of 999策略白菜网站 area, and accordingly provide guidance for in-depth investigation.
PROCESS AND RESULTS
According to their own tasks, six groups conduct targeted research and analysis within one week. On 999策略白菜网站 one hand, students focus on 999策略白菜网站 basic surveying and mapping of 999策略白菜网站 old street, collecting information from various overlays such as space, structure, scale, material and technology; On 999策略白菜网站 other hand, they do some research to respond to their topics by literature review and field visits.
999策略白菜网站 research presentations were held in Lianghe primary school on 999策略白菜网站 morning of May 4. Each group make a comprehensive display of 999策略白菜网站 various surveying and mapping achievements and research topics in multiple ways, such as drawings, sketches, diagrams, photography, video, written notes and so on. Some of them also proposed preliminary design concepts to cope with 999策略白菜网站 possibility of future development on 999策略白菜网站 historical streets.
At present, 999策略白菜网站 first week fieldwork of 999策略白菜网站 International Joint Studiohas been successfully completed. 999策略白菜网站 materials and achievements of 999策略白菜网站 workshop will be shared to every school as a basis for further design work. 999策略白菜网站 final achievements will be presented scheduled on June 14 at IUAV in Italy.
